Motion Design: 10 sec animation

In this assignment we were making a 10-second animation. We had to come up with the story and concept ourselves, as well as designing all of the illustrations, and animating all of it together. We were looking closer into motion design and the process of animating, from start to finish. Throughout the process we were going through the preparations, the illustrative work, the technical, and the animating, as well as all of the important check-points in-between.

The theme of my animation are mothers, and the concept is about mothers being heroes without capes. I wanted to tell a story where I illustrated this concept; mothers as invisible heroes. As mothers we have the most important job in the world. Mothers sacrifice so much, and it is often taken for granted. I wanted to illustrate this, that just being mothers, are heroic. I especially wanted to focus on the magic of pregnancy, birth and the first period as a new mother - and the primal woman in us. The story focuses on both the rough and the more enjoyable parts of motherhood, to illustrate the magic of it all being merged together. The message are to tell mothers that «you are doing fine!». First and foremost, I want this to have an empowering effect on mothers. As well as mothers, I also want it to reach the closest relations of mothers, especially mothers that are new in their roles. Disclaimer: My intention for this animation is to empower mothers. I recognize that some parts of the storyline (pregnancy and birth) can come off as excluding for some mothers, this is not my intention. I have also focused on the other parts of motherhood so It can feel more inclusive for all types of mothers.

Since my concept is about conveying female energy, the style needed to be feminine, soft and harmonic. All of the components that I used are a part of enhancing this. The style I was going for can in a broader term be called for Conceptual illustration. The style is more metaphoric than realistic, this means that the illustration may contain more realistic elements, but the main intention of the design is to radiate the mood, metaphor and the subjectivity of the illustration. The style is also flat, and I chose to incorporate it with gradients in the background. The gradients has a grained texture. I also added a stone texture over all of the animation video to add a more organic and earthy vibe to the overall design. The shapes are free-flowing, which makes the illustrations lean towards the abstract aspect. I used toned-down earthy colors in my design because I felt that it would both fit with the style, and enhance the vibe and message of the animation.
